A while ago ~~Sylvain~~ stumbled across Janino. Another java compiler that could be used for the jci (java compiler interface). Unfortunately it’s LGPL.

Update: hurray, just a few days ago they relicensed it under ASL!

JANINO is distributed under the New BSD license since mid 2005, if anyone's interested

Looks like licensing was already changed to be Apache style. At leasts that's stated on the project's page.

iirc, some codehausers have been chatting with him about a license change to something friendlier. if you drop an encouraging line, it might help =)
